Sumatra PDF Portable is the lightweight Sumatra PDF packaged as a portable app, so you can view PDF files on the go. Sumatra PDF is distributed under GPLv2 license. Sumatra supports SyncTeX, a bidirectional method for synchronizing TeX source and PDF output produced by pdfTeX or XeTeX. It also acts as an Image Viewer and an XPS reader. Sumatra PDF can also read various other eBook formats such as epub, mobi, cbz, and cbr. So, saying that it’s missing a lot of features as a disadvantage is simply not justified. Sumatra is multilingual, with 20 community-contributed translations. This is a great reader for those who just want to read their PDFs without any distractions. Hyperlinks that are embedded in PDF documents are not active in Sumatra. This results in very large spool files and potentially slow printing on printers with little memory. ![]() Printing is achieved in Sumatra by transforming each pdf page into a bitmap image. Without closing the PDF file a user can recompile the text document and generate a new PDF file and then press the R key to refresh the PDF document. It has a 5 MB setup file, compared to Adobe Reader's 50 MB, for Windows. ![]() As is characteristic of many portable applications, Sumatra takes up little disk space. This classifies it as a portable application. It's designed for portable use: it's just one file with no external dependencies so you can easily run it from external USB drive. Simplicity of the user interface has a high priority. Sumatra PDF is powerful, small, portable and starts up very fast. Pros : open source (no crapware) small and fast portable or installable – depending on your need regularly updated In the end, Sumatra does everything with a PDF that 90% of the people require, and if you’re one such them, you better use it in place of some bloated alternative. I actually think it’s good (your browser won’t crash or hog memory because of the PDF file), but you may have other views. Every time you click a PDF link on your browser, Sumatra will open it in it’s own window instead of fitting into the browser. Second, it doesn’t create browser plug-ins. First, it doesn’t have an annotation tool (found in Foxit). However, it does miss a few bells and whistles that might be important to you. I’ve been using Sumatra PDF for the last few weeks and I don’t have any issues with it. Sumatra also comes in a handy portable version, which you can carry around in your thumb drives. Your PDFs will load just fine, and you can read them as you do on Adobe or Foxit. But let me tell you this – Sumatra does what it says it does, and it does that well. Recently out of beta, Sumatra is downright barebones and ugly you might even throw up the first time it loads on your desktop (see below). Open source utility Sumatra PDF improves upon Foxit’s speed and cuts out the crap to become one seriously recommended tool in your software arsenal. Personally, I’d rather recommend a default installation of Adobe Reader than that of Foxit, as you’re going to end up with all the added crapware in the latter. While installing and using Foxit, you’ve got to dodge a dozen toolbars, advertisements, and “recommended” updates (most of which aren’t free) to maintain Foxit as the lean, fast thing it previously was. Foxit has always been a great alternative to Adobe, but it has developed it’s own problems of late. You probably knew all this and switched over to Foxit Reader ages ago. Sumatra PDF is an open-source PDF, eBook (ePub, Mobi), XPS, DjVu, CHM, Comic Book (CBZ and CBR) reader for Microsoft Windows OS (runs on XP, Vista, 7 and 8). It eats 200 MBs of your hard disk and half your processor (while running), just for opening PDF files.
